Dr Mike Hodson

Senior Research Fellow

Mike is Senior Research Fellow in the Sustainable Consumption Institute. His research focuses on the shape of future sustainable cities and understanding this at the intersections between territorial transitions and transitions in urban infrastructures. Mike is currently working with colleagues from the Alliance Manchester Business School on a project analysing the implications of political devolution for urban transitions in housing and transport, and, from this, how processes of devolution can be enhanced. Mike was previously Senior Research Fellow at Salford University, where he spent a decade in the Centre for Sustainable Urban and Regional Futures (SURF) working in the area of urban and regional governance and transitions. He has published and presented widely on this research agenda.

Central to this vision are two ideas: cities should meet social needs, especially of the poor, and not exceed the ability of the global environment to meet needs.

What does the transition to a Low Carbon Britain mean for the future development of cities and regions across the country? Does it reinforce existing ‘business as usual’ or create new transformational opportunities? Low Carbon Nation? takes an interdisciplinary approach to tackle this critical question, by looking across the different dimensions of technological, scientific, social and economic change within the diverse city and regional contexts of the UK.
